Apple has just announced that Madden NFL 2010 will be available on iTunes sometime today.

TouchArcade has a great preview of the game, which includes some of the following features:

• All NFL teams, players and stadiums.
• “Action Control Time”.  When things are about to get interesting (almost tackled, etc), the game slows down so you can decide what to do: spin, juke, etc.
• Draw your own hot routes.  Before the snap, press the hot routes button and draw the new route on the screen.  Nice!
• Kicking interface similar to Tiger Woods Golf, which is a good thing — it’s a nice interface.
• Price will be $7.99 today, going up to $9.99 tomorrow evening.

As TechCrunch says, “they’re not ESPN”, but the apps they’ve put out so far are much better.  They have a very popular fantasy football league on Facebook, and an app that ties directly into it.  It’s superb.

Even better is their “Sportacular” app (free version, $1.99 version).  It’s somewhat similar to the ESPN ScoreCenter app, but it does so much more.  It has tons of scores, stats and features, and push notifications for all kinds of events.  You can get notifications on a single game, or all games from a team.  From there, it gets even more granular and lets you choose to be alerted:

• Pre-Game (3 hr)
• Game Start
• Game End
• Score Change
• Inning/Period End
• Every 3rd Inning (baseball, of course)

This lets me do some cool things.  I have it set to give me the “Game End” alerts for Atlanta Braves games.  I’m a casual fan, and it’ll be nice to see final scores roll in.  During football season, though, I have it set to alert me when some teams Start and End, so I can know when to look for the game on TV.

Billed as the “first full featured football game to enter the App Store”, NFL 2010 is a solid first entry.  The controls take a bit of getting used to, but work fairly well.  There is a full season mode, nice playbook, and a variety of stadiums.

All in all, it’s a solid game.  Madden is due to come out fairly soon, so it’ll be interesting to see how the two stack up.
